Egypt’s planned national
smart ID card scheme is one
of the biggest such projects in
the region and is likely to open
for international tenders in
2010.
Amr Shawki, chairman of the
Cairo-based regional smart card
industry association Arab-Smart
and founder of Cardex Middle
East, told Card World that
around 45 million of Egypt’s
total 76 million population are
scheduled to be issued with the
contact chip cards. Shawki says
he is “constantly” receiving
inquiries from international vendors
about the progress of the
much-delayed project which
dwarfs other ID projects in the
region such as those in Saudi

Arab-Smart, A new regional Smart
Cards & Smart Solutions
Association.

A new Association for Smart cards and Smart Solutions was formed in Cairo
as a response to the call for a regional Association in the Middle East by
Amr G Shawki,the Chairman of Egytec Engineering and the founder of Cardex
conference and exhibition. The general Assembly formed the first board and Mr.Shawki
was elected as the first founder Chairman of the association due to his track
record in working within the community in enhancing the level of awareness and
knowledge in the region.
The board includes 10 members representing the industry names, Sameh Bedair
as Vice Chairman, Amr rashad as General Secretary,Ashraf Sabry as a treasurer,
and Amr Soliman,Hoda Shoukry,Ibrahim Sanad,Momdouh Fouda,Sherif Halouda,
Tamer Sadek and Amr Lehita as board members.
Arab-smart main objective is to narrow the gaps between technology providers
and end-users in the Middle east and Africa regions.
Mr. Shawki has announced to the Egyptian TV on 9th June 2009, that Arab-Smart
will establish chapters in 7 countries to build bridges of awareness,knowledge
and trust within the region.The main objective of Arab Smart as per Mr.Shawki,is
taking the lead in positioning the ' Smart Cards & Smart Solutions Technologies
' within the information technology environment & supporting the members in their
objectives.
Arab-Smart membership is open for all individuals,technology providers,NGO's
and Academic bodies from all over the world.
Arab-Smart first Global discussion forum will take place on 14 December 2009
during the Cardex conference in Cairo.
